Why Yoga alignment is important

Not all yoga classes are created equally

This is the beauty of Yoga: the fluidity, the ability to take what resonates with the individual and absorb messages or dogma that is suitable to their needs.

As a perpetual yoga student, I observed that some yoga classes may lack the baseline (fundamental) information that is needed to practice the poses properly given what the student brings to the class. As a yoga teacher, I understand the difficult task to inform students of the complexities and elements of each posture in a 60-minute class.

Yoga is about the process of learning how to tend to our bodies. Our knowledge of Yoga and each posture grow as we continue to practice. We build a more comprehensive, complex definition of the posture and ourselves.

This concept is not novel. The truth of Yoga discussed in the original texts such as the Bhagavad Ghita, the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, is that it is the union of the mind and the body. The deepening of the connection to the self. Translations of the term Yoga in Sanskrit include “union”, “to yoke or join”. (Although it is important to note that the translations are disputed.)

Yoga is a tool to understand how our inner and outer world is intrinsically connected…a tool to understand how we can tend to our selves. And as students of Yoga, we are empowering ourselves to become our own guide, our own source of healing, and our own teachers.

By understanding the proper alignment you ensure the proper functioning of your body's systems. You can apply this knowledge to your daily life, posture, and activity, (whether or not this is a yoga practice or not). It is like an expanding toolbox you can use in any situation. Yoga is intended for everyone, every stage of life, every situation. The present awareness you bring will allow you to radiate your light and your gifts to others.

Join me on this journey of discovery where I share the beauty of Yoga through fun-size videos where I will breakdown the elements of the pose + how you can apply this to your lifestyle.
